Yale L. Fisher, MD

Yale L. Fisher, MDYale L. Fisher is an ophthalmologist at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital where he is a Director of the Surgical Retinal Service, and a Surgeon Director at the Hospital. He is also a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center. He is a graduate of Cornell University, and Cornell Medical School where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies, their most distinguished academic awards.

Dr. Fisher’s career is noteworthy in the areas of patient care, teaching, and research. He is the author of several textbooks in the field of vitreoretinal diseases and ultrasonography. Dr. Fisher has published more than fifty scientific articles and numerous scientific exhibits and posters. He has become a course director for the American Academy of Ophthalmology for over 22 years and a review editor for many prestigious ophthalmic journals. He has received numerous awards for national and international professorships and lectureships. He has also been awarded the coveted Senior Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has lectured throughout the United States and abroad in the areas of ultrasonography and vitreoretinal surgery, developing new techniques and instruments in his field as well as pioneering the most recent developments in ocular endoscopy. He was selected by departmental chairmen and sections chiefs at major centers nationwide as one of the 400 best doctors in America. Dr. Fisher has developed numerous intraocular surgical instruments which have advanced the field of vitreoretinal surgery. These instruments include electromagnets as well as endoscopic techniques for situations where microscopic visualization is limited or impossible, all innovative contributions to the field of ophthalmology and the goals of preservation and restoration of vision.

He serves on the Macula Foundation, Inc., which is dedicated to enhancing clinical research and teaching in the area of retinal and macular diseases. The Macula Foundation supports the activities of the LuEsther T. Mertz Research Center at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and gives annual awards to support numerous institutions throughout our country and abroad.

On a personal level, Dr. Fisher is interested in cultural affairs, world travel, music, and most of all, his family. His loving wife, Meg is his primary focus, his greatest supporter, inspiration, and dear friend. His son, Douglas, a student at Stanford University College, intends to enter the field of medicine; his daughter, Robin, is in high school here in New York; his youngest, Alexandra, is in pre–school. His sister, Rona, is a teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Bertha, his loving mother, lives in Florida.
