For 25 years, Dr. Shields has been active in the care of patients with ocular tumors and in clinical research to improve methods for the diagnosis and treatment of eye cancers. For the last several years, he has brought his clinical expertise in tumors to the New York offices of Vitreous–Retina–Macula Consultants while also maintaining his Philadelphia practice full–time.
Dr. Shields’ main contributions have been in the treatment of malignant melanoma, a tumor which affects the eyes of adults, and retinoblastoma, a tumor seen in the eyes of children.
